Think great coffee, think Starbucks, right? Well, your favourite Coffee chain has a lot more to it than Short, Tall, Grande & Venti. Here are 7 interesting facts about Starbucks that will leave you spellbound.


1.The founders were initially going to name it ‘Pequod’. Starbucks was initially to be named Pequod, after the whaling ship in the book Moby Dick. Well, since it was started by a writer, a history teacher and an English teacher, that’s what you would expect! Luckily, they settled for the name Starbucks, which too is a character from the same book.

2.Starbucks runs some super secret ‘Stealth Cafes’. Starbucks is so serious about the coffee business that it even runs “stealth Starbucks” cafes! These cafes are devoid of the Starbucks signage, logo etc. and function as regular coffee houses. The purpose it to do market research on customer’s reactions and preferences without clouding their judgement.

3.Their biggest cup size is larger than the human stomach. The largest cup size at Starbucks began with a 12 ounce tall cup. Today it is a 31-ounce Trenta which is larger than the average human stomach! Launched in 2011, Trenta means thirty in Italian. Cheers to the liquid diet!

4.The number of employees at Starbucks is more than the population of some entire countries. Starbucks refers to its employees as ‘partners’. Presently the company has 191000 partners. This is more than the entire population of Fiji!

5.Starbucks initially did not sell brewed coffee. Yes, it’s true. The very first Starbucks was situated at 2000 Western Avenue in Seattle, Washington. It opened on 30 March 1971. But surprisingly it did not see ready to drink coffee. Instead it was intended to sell coffee equipment and roasted whole coffee beans.

6.Starbucks even has some stores made entirely from old ship containers. The company prides itself on being eco friendly. In fact, in 2011 they built several stores from old shipping containers. While these stores are mostly drive-through they still maintain the coffee flavour and are a boon for the environment.


7.A Starbucks Grande coffee has 4 times the amount of caffeine in a red bull. Don’t be so surprised. The Grande coffee contains 320 milligrams of caffeine, which you would get from roughly 4 cans of the energy drink red bull. This coffee certainly gives you wings.
